I’m Organization-Obsessed and I Swear by These 5 Hacks

Source: Sunny Circle Studio

As that weirdo in college with an obsessive habit of deep-cleaning and reorganizing my apartment, my passion for organization has always fallen on the extreme side of the spectrum. But now, with a full-time job and a side hustle, organization falls to the wayside amid jam-packed schedules and ever-expanding to-do lists. Since I know that nonstop days are inevitable and my busy to-do list isn’t going anywhere, I’ve come up with a few tricks to keep my home as organized as I like it, without spending too much time. These habits make it possible for me to keep life organized, even when life threatens to overwhelm order. By committing to these five daily habits, I keep my clutter under control, and you can too. Read on for the organizational hacks I swear by keeping my life tidy, even during the busiest weeks.

1. Unpack your bag when you get home

Unpacking my bag immediately when I get home is a holy grail step for me. See, I’m a schlepper. I’m that person who totes a massive purse with her everywhere she goes. While I love the convenience of an oversized bag (it’s a lunchbox, backpack, and makeup bag!), I don’t love fishing around for headphones, my phone, or lip gloss. The fix? Reorganizing and unpacking regularly. As soon as I get home, I set my purse down and take everything out of it (à la Mary Poppins). I then put everything away (lunch container on the kitchen counter, shoes on the shelf, lipstick in the organizer, etc.) immediately so I don’t have any clutter in my purse or in my home.

2. Clean the kitchen while the coffee brews

By my calculation (or, you know, the kitchen clock), it takes eight minutes for my java to brew, which means I have eight minutes to tidy up before I can take that perfect first sip. Every morning, I spend a few minutes cleaning off the counter, putting dishes away, and cleaning anything leftover from the night before. I make sure that the kitchen is cleaned (in just a few minutes!) before I drink my coffee. Not only does this save me the hassle of having to straighten up after work, but it’s also a way for me to make the most out of those few precious minutes before it’s time to start the workday.

3. Put things back right away

Sounds like common sense that when you take something out, you put it away, right? Try telling yourself that when it’s 10 p.m. and you’re cozy in bed with your pajamas on and a cup of tea in hand. But the second you finish a book, you should place it back on your bookshelf. Or your laptop, a magazine, or your phone, etc. The point is that when you’re done with whatever it is, put it back where it belongs. Don’t leave it precariously at the end of the bed, don’t let it take up extra square footage on the couch, and don’t relegate it to a pile of “stuff” on the coffee table. Doing so just creates a visual eyesore and one that’s more time consuming to put away in the long run as item upon item stacks up. Get in the habit of putting everything back as soon as you’re doing using it to save you time and clutter in the wrong run.

4. Wash the dishes right after dinner

I know washing up after you’ve gone all MasterChef and prepared a showstopper of a dinner is probably the last thing you want to do. However, it’s best to do dishes as soon as possible so that food doesn’t stick onto pots and pans after sitting for a while. Because I’m the type of person who always needs dessert, I’ve incorporated cleaning up into my dessert routine. After making and enjoying dinner, I return to the kitchen to wash whatever pots and pans I used that night. While I’m washing, I multitask by turning on the kettle for tea. By the time I’ve scrubbed my last pot, the water is ready for my cup of chamomile and I reward myself with dessert.

5. Pick out your outfits on Sunday

A few months into working my current job, I noticed it was taking me longer and longer to get ready in the morning, all because of my outfits. I’d put on a shirt, realize it didn’t work with my skirt so I’d swap it out for a sweater only to decide it’s too bulky for the skirt. Before I knew it, 15-20 minutes had passed just focused on my outfit. I began carving out time on Sundays to pick out and plan my outfits for the week. Doing it in advance also allowed me to check the weather and review my schedule for the week. Am I working from home every day? Do I have meetings? Events? Planning everything out ahead of time saves me the hassle of figuring out what to wear the morning of. But the best part? There’s never an endless sea of clothes thrown around the room.

4 Ways to Make Your Space Feel Clean in 15 Minutes or Less

The ‘Modern Beehive’ Is About to Be the Next Big Hair Trend

Anya Taylor Joy wearing the 2021 modern beehive hair trend in Last Night in SohoLast Night in Soho

If there's one hair trend we're seeing pop up time and time again in 2021, it's the modern beehive. While we undoubtedly have Amy Winehouse to thank for the '60s beehive resurgence of the '00s, this year, the retro hairstyle has been seen on countless Fashion Week catwalks (think: Moschino, Christian Cowan, and Batsheva), on various awards season red carpets, and, more recently, on Anya Taylor-Joy, who stars in Edgar Wright's upcoming psychological horror film Last Night in Soho.

Taylor-Joy's blonde beehive, featuring a blunt fringe and soft waves, makes sense – the new film, in which Taylor-Joy plays wannabe singer Sandy, is set in the Swinging Sixties. The official description reads: "A young girl, passionate about fashion design, is mysteriously able to enter the 1960s where she encounters her idol, a dazzling wannabe singer. But 1960s London is not what it seems, and time seems to fall apart with shady consequences." Last Night In Soho recently premiered at the Venice Film Festival and will be released in cinemas on Friday, October 29.

We first saw the style making a welcome comeback at the Brit Awards in May when Dua Lipa wore her dark hair pulled back into a high, voluminous bun with long strands framing her face.

Then, at the BAFTA TV Awards in June, Aimee Lou Wood's chic updo served all the modern beehive drama. The 26-year-old Sex Education star, who picked up the award for Best Female Performance in a Comedy, wore a flowing floral dress with a statement collar by Miu Miu, her signature winged eyeliner, and her hair in a subtle beehive with face-framing bangs.

It's safe to say the celeb-adored style is set to be the next big hair trend — so we called upon hairstylist Patrick Wilson, the person behind Wood's modern beehive, to tell us how to get the look at home.

"The inspiration for Aimee's hair is drawn from the '60s — think Brigitte Bardot, beehive silhouettes," Wilson says. "The dress was Miu Miu, and the minute I saw the collar, I knew it had to be a hair-up. I wanted to create something with a nod to Brigitte, but that still felt Aimee."

On the modern beehive as an emerging trend, Wilson commented: "We have been living in a world where we haven't been able to go to the hairdressers and massively missing the beauty industry as a whole, so I think that women are wanting to wear their hair differently. I feel we all need something fun right now and this is exactly what I wanted to achieve with Aimee's hair for the BAFTAs."

Here's how to get the modern beehive look, according to a pro:

  1. I prepped the hair using Tigi Bed Head Queen For A Day Thickening Spray ($20), and blow-dried with the GHD Helios Professional Hair Dryer ($250), and a round brush.
  2. I directed the bangs back, away from the face with the GHD 1 ¼" Soft Curling Iron ($199).
  3. Once the prep was finished, I added Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray ($48) to the roots, backcombing to add height.
  4. Using my Mason Pearson Popular Mixture Hair Brush ($240), I brushed the hair back and rolled it into a French roll. Then I manipulated the shape with my fingers to make it look more lived-in before securing.
  5. Top tip: This look is all about the prep. If you fail to prep the style, it won't last. My advice would be to use a mousse to hold the look in place. And using two mirrors to check the balance and shape in the back helps too.

Saweetie Is In Her Red Hair Era and We’re Loving Every Moment

Saweetie posing on the 2021 MTV Video Music Awards in a silver dress and blonde hairGetty Images

In April, Saweetie became a blonde bombshell with a stunning honey-color hue. The bright-blonde hair got its fair share of love in braided ponytails, chic topknots, and other fire hairstyles for a few months. Then, in September, the Bay Area rapper ditched her light hair for a cute ginger hue, to her fans' delight. Now, she's swapping out the copper color for a much brighter red that is truly phenomenal.

The Icy Queen shared the new candy-apple-red hair color in an Instagram carousel on October 13. This red is bright with a capital B and she wears it well. There's a slight ombré effect at the roots where the color fades from black to scarlet for a seamless look. Her long, straight hair cascades way past her waist and is styled with a part down the middle and two braids running through the front half of the hair. The bright red braids were crossed over and pinned in the middle at the back of her head.

Who would Saweetie be without a hairline full of laid edges? Her baby hairs were undoubtedly slicked, swooped, and looped with expertise. Perhaps her stylist used the Kiss Edge Fixer Glued gel, for which the rapper has served as a spokesperson, or another amazing gel, like the Best of Beauty Award-winning African Pride Extra Hold Braid, Loc, & Twist Gel, to keep those hairs slicked down. Until we know for sure, we'll just keep fawning over their perfection.

Saweetie seems to be fully embracing her red hair era and we can't get enough. How long will she keep this specific shade of red? For the record, we think she would look phenomenal with an auburn hue or a bright orange and we can't wait to see what's next.

How to Try on Makeup Looks From Our Most Recent Photo Shoots

Image may contain Graphics Art Animal Bird and Paint Container

There are a few instances in history that totally changed the way we shop: The invention of the credit card, the advent of the mall, a little thing called the World Wide Web. Most recently, the pandemic has affected the way we consume goods, especially makeup. Remember the days when you would stroll down the aisle of your favorite beauty store, swatching and sampling the many different colors and textures of the season? COVID-19 has taken us far from that haven, essentially eliminating in-store testers for hygiene reasons. But there are new ways to play with product and innovative looks from home.

We've partnered with YouCam Makeup app to bring the pages of our recent issues to life — virtually, of course. You can use the augmented reality technology to try on several looks from our colorful shoots, and you can shop products curated by our editors right in the app. When you download the YouCam Makeup app, you'll see that there is a special Allure section with plenty to play with. You can also try on several new products from Too Faced, our exclusive advertising partner.

As you might imagine, our collective interest in trying on makeup from the comfort of home peaked amid the pandemic: YouCam Makeup now has over 950 million downloads globally. So, for our Science of Beauty issue, we dug into the augmented-reality app's data to discover the makeup users have tried on the most this year. The results? What you see here: sheer cranberry lipstick and warm purple eye shadow.

How to Decorate Your Home With Color

When it comes to designing your home, it’s easy to stay in a comfort zone of neutrals. Who could blame us? Neutrals evolve easily over time with your style and leave plenty of room for you to switch up the accent pieces from season to season. Let me be clear: We stan a good neutral. Still, a scroll on Instagram these days will quickly show solid proof that pigment is making a comeback, and our favorite interior designers are giving us plenty of ideas on how to decorate with color. Below, we’re sharing seven foolproof ways that designers are adding a bit more flavor to their latest projects.

1. Ditch the white couch

While colors like pink and blue may feel like bold choices, the right shade can still offer plenty of versatility while being a lot more pet- and kid-friendly than a clean white couch. It’s no secret that we’re fans of functional decor, so when it comes to adding pieces to our home that can make a statement, add some depth, and stand the test of time, we turn to The Everygirl’s collab with Interior Define. From sectionals to sofas to accent chairs and beyond, our collection serves up plenty of fabrics and rich color options to take any room from safe and neutral to head-turning and eye-catching in no time flat.

2. Bring a colorful runner into a classic kitchen

Kitchens are one of the biggest (if not the biggest) investments you’ll make in your home, so it’s understandable if you find yourself wanting to stick with timeless design elements. For a dose of affordable (and low commitment) color and character, try bringing in a vintage kitchen runner rug that brings in a distinct personality to the space.

3. Show off color and pattern in accent pillows and blankets

The best part about bringing in color through accent pillows and blankets is that they’re relatively affordable to change, depending on your mood or time of year. In fall and winter, you might find yourself drawn more to jewel tones or moodier plums and emerald or olive shades, while spring and summer are the perfect times of year to bring in blush pinks and sage green.

4. Paint the walls a rosy hue

A post shared by Carley Page Summers (@carlaypage)

Of course, any color on the wall that strikes your fancy will do swimmingly, but I particularly love this rosy hue found in interior designer and photographer Carley Page’s dining room. It manages to feel warm, soft, and subtle while still making a huge impact on the overall look and feel of the space.

5. Jazz up your cabinetry

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Kate Lester Interiors (@klinteriors)

There’s really no better way to make a huge impact than painted cabinetry. It’s simple but commanding and can revamp old cabinets or add character to new ones. If you’re on the fence, consider a dynamic blue or soft green in place of something pastel or jewel-toned. I once heard a designer say that earth colors will always be considered timeless, so it’s safe to say you’ll be happy with your decision for years to come.

6. Create a gallery wall of colorful art

Bringing in colorful art to an otherwise neutral space immediately injects personality and a unique sense of style. Art is a great way to share your story: You can frame your favorite travel photos, images with your loved ones or personal creative endeavors, or invest in a work created by an artist you love.

Long gone are the days when white subway tiles reigned supreme. We still love them, of course, but with so many beautiful handmade tiles on the market, there’s no need to limit yourself. 5 Kinky Sex Positions to Try This Month

Source: Anna Tarazevich | Pexels

OK, let’s take a moment to get really honest: What would you consider to be your wildest sex fantasy? Maybe you imagine you and your partner playing with rope and tying each other up, role-playing a scandalous scenario, impossibly acrobatic sex positions, or having sex in a public place.

It may surprise you, but these are all considered examples of kinky sex. Some people may hear the word kink and think it is limited to fetishes or intense bondage, but what many don’t realize is that kink embodies a wide range of sexual interests.

There are many different definitions of what kink is, but it is most commonly described as something that deals with some level of power-play or fantasy. Kinky acts can include anything from role-playing, different levels of bondage, BDSM, dressing up in costume, and exploring other types of fantasies with your partner. During 2020, some of the most common kinks among people were virtual sex, dom/sub play, bondage, and anal play.

And although kink used to have a much more negative connotation in our society, more people are now opening their minds to it and trying it out for themselves. If you and your partner have been curious about adding a bit more kink to the bedroom but haven’t been sure where to start, here are a few sex positions to try right now:

Source: Timur Weber | Pexels

Before you get started

If you’re curious about kink, there are a few important things to take note of before giving it a go:

  • You may find things you really enjoy, and you may find things you never want to try again. The important part of trying kink is listening to your body, trusting your body, and communicating clearly with your partner.
  • Before you try anything new, talk to each other about what you both want, and especially make sure to get clear on the things you don’t want. Consent between both parties is always important, and this absolutely includes trying different types of kinky sex.
  • A common tool that couples use when they engage in kinky play, especially when it includes bondage or restraints, is coming up with a safe word between the two of you. If this safe word is used at any point, everything must stop immediately!
  • When you and your partner use any type of bondage or restraints, make sure you use something that can be taken off very easily in case someone experiences unexpected anxiety after being “tied up.” More advanced levels of bondage and rope play should only be performed if you both have learned the proper and safe techniques.
  • Have fun and explore! Trying new things not only connects you to yourself and your own sexuality more deeply, but it also brings more connection between you and your partner.

1. Heels Over Head

This one might require a bit of flexibility, but it’s worth the extra stretching! For this, you’re going to spread your legs and let your partner grab you by the ankles, lifting your legs toward the sky. Think about the happy baby position at the end of a yoga class, only kinkier.

This is naturally a more dominant and submissive position because the person on the bottom is letting their partner hold onto them and control the movement. For some, this new move is kinky enough. But if you want to turn up the dial, you can have your partner restrain you with some fun cuffs or light playful rope.

Kink tip: When choosing a rope to play with, you’ll want to always buy one that is specifically intended for bondage. These ropes are much softer and won’t hurt your skin.

2. Using a Blindfold

So this isn’t one particular sex position per se, but experimenting with a blindfold in bed is a gentle, fun way for beginner kinksters to get their feet (or other things) wet.

Temporarily removing your sense of sight naturally enhances your ability to use your other senses during sex. Not only will every little touch from your partner feel heightened, but the anticipation of not knowing what is coming next is extremely arousing to some people!

Some popular positions to try while blindfolding is a spooning position, doggy style with the receiver wearing the blindfold, and blindfolding your partner while you give them oral sex.

3. Bent Over the Bed

This one may not seem as kinky to some, but the reason it’s such a good position for beginner kink exploration is that it allows for a few different variations.

You can start by having one partner bend over on the bed, desk, or even a countertop (because getting creative can up the kink level for sure) while their partner penetrates them using a toy, their penis, or their fingers. If you both love this, you can totally do it and still enjoy the excitement of trying something new, especially because this is another position that already feels naturally dominating without being too intimidating.

If you both want to add a bit more playing and experimenting to the mix, there are a few things you can try! You can have the person in the back use their hands to hold down their partner or even try tying their partner’s hands behind their back. This allows the person in the back to really step into that “dom” role. If you both want to play around with light slapping or using something like a playful whip, this could be a great position to try.

4. The Giraffe

This oral sex position is great for kinky beginners because the partner giving oral sex is lying in a new, somewhat vulnerable position while their partner stands above them. The excitement of this dynamic can be arousing enough, but you can kink it up a notch by having the receiver blindfold their partner or lightly tying their partner’s hands together.

5. Arms and/or Legs Tied to the Bed

Light bondage is a great way to become familiar with kink. You can try this a few different ways, with the most common being to tie one partner’s wrists to the bedpost behind them. You can also do this with their ankles if they want to experiment even more.

This is commonly done with sex rope, but we don’t recommend beginners use rope unless they specifically know the proper knots for an easy release. This is in case you end up feeling any anxiety once you’re totally restrained. Easy-release knots often help us relax and enjoy the process, as we know we can make a quick escape at any point.

If you’re just starting out, we highly recommend waiting on the rope and instead using something like these silk restraints or this beginner bedroom restraint kit.

45 Best Gifts to Give Practical, Hard-to-Shop-for People

Best Practical Gifts A collaged image of a terracotta Always Pan Disney x Touchland Hand Sanitizer box and Tuft Needle...Soleil Summer / Allure

All products featured on Allure are independently selected by our editors. However, when you buy something through our retail links, we may earn an affiliate commission.

The season of gift-giving is officially upon us, which means it's time to start the age-old, head-scratching tradition of deciding who on your list gets what. As experienced gift-givers ourselves, we know that holiday shopping can become overwhelming very quickly — so we have some advice for you. When in doubt, go with a practical present that'll make their lives easier and always get put to good use.

But just because they don't necessarily come with bells and whistles, that doesn't mean practical gifts do not have to be boring. After all, there's nothing mundane about a luxurious weighted blanket that'll keep your loved ones cozy and warm while easing their anxiety at the same time. Perhaps it's time to convert your loved ones to the bidet life, because no one likes an irritated bum or running to the store at a moment's notice to restock toilet paper. There's even something special about a robot mop that literally does all their floor polishing while they sit back and relax with their favorite show.

To help you ease into the holiday spirit, we're sharing a bunch of practical gift ideas that anyone on your list would deeply appreciate. (And they'll think of you every time — perhaps even every day — they make use of it.) In line with the practical theme, you'll probably want to get an earlier start than normal on your shopping list — shipping and stocking delays are still (unfortunately) quite commonplace.

For pretty obvious reasons, beauty lovers are our favorite kind of gift recipients over here at Allure. And yes, there are comparatively more practical gifts in the beauty department that'll last much longer than a vitamin C serum they may or may not end up using. Your beauty-loving friends will get just as excited as we do over a well-lit mirror, such as this Bluetooth-enabled Riki Loves Riki option, which can be easily paired to your phone for selfies at the press of a button and includes a magnetic holder/dock.

Of course, any burgeoning beauty collection needs smart storage solutions like Awenia's Rotating Makeup Organizer, which clearly lays out everything they use in their daily routine and doesn't look like a total eyesore.

Few things beat the comforting feeling of throwing on a onesie, like The French Terry Jumpsuit from Everlane, for a relaxing day spent inside. If the dry air is affecting the state of their skin, they'll definitely appreciate a Canopy humidifier, which packs a punch — 2.5 liters of water across 500 square feet for up to 36 hours of running time — without taking up a ton of space. (It even fits on top of most nightstands.) Those aren't the only features worth applauding. Smart sensors increase humidity levels at nighttime while embedded UV lights kill 99.9 percent of bacteria in the water before it's released into the air. They can even pop the various parts into the dishwasher for a quick, mess-free cleanse.

Having the right pillow also totally changes the game. Helix's Adjustable Pillow includes a removable insert so your recipient can tailor the height and support they desire. Halsey Shared ‘Important,’ Honest Photos of Their Body 3 Months After Giving Birth

Halsey shared postpartum body photos on Instagram.Getty Images

Singer Halsey gave a stellar performance on Saturday Night Live this weekend but found it a little "weird" to get so many compliments on their body after appearing on the show. Halsey, who gave birth to first baby Ender in July, then shared an honest behind-the-scenes look at their postpartum body — and the very normal changes it's going through — on Instagram.

"I am posting this because no matter what I do people are going to talk about my body. It is [a] confusing symptom of being in the public eye so rather than complain I am going to give you something real to talk about!" Halsey, 27, began their Instagram caption. "I did SNL two nights ago and a lot of people were quick to say how good I looked. That was a weird feeling."

They continued, "My body has felt like a stranger's for a long time. I uphold myself to honesty to the point of over sharing sometimes but this feels important." Halsey explained that the first picture in their slideshow was taken just a few days after giving birth. "A lot of people don’t know that you still look pregnant for a while after," they said. "It is still changing and I am letting it. I have no interest in working out right now. I’m too tired and too busy playing with my darling son."

View on Instagram

Halsey then explained a little more about why they wanted to share these photos now: "With that being said, the body behind all those compliments the other night was wearing a custom tailored outfit and lighted perfectly after much testing, so I could feel good and do my job," they wrote. "I do not want to feed the Illusion that you're meant to feel and look 'great' immediately postpartum. That is not my narrative currently. If you've been following me because you're also a parent and you dig what I'm doing, please know I'm in your corner."

The truth is that "I will never have my 'pre-baby body back' no matter how it changes physically because I have now had a baby!" Halsey said. "And that has altered me forever; emotionally, spiritually, and physically. That change is permanent. And I don't want to go back!"

Of course, it's completely normal for your body to undergo some serious changes before and after giving birth, although what that looks like may be different from person to person. Despite how normal those changes are, new parents often feel immense societal pressure to quickly "get back" to the way their body looked and felt before pregnancy — a literally impossible task, as Halsey notes. Sure, certain postpartum exercises can help build core strength and even address some of the physiological changes that may come with pregnancy, but far too many people feel an overwhelming sense that they need to lose a ton of weight or try to look exactly the way they did before giving birth rather than embracing the natural changes their body went through and continues to experience.

"In the spirit of honesty, I'm really tired and not a superhuman and this is really hard," Halsey ended their caption. "Doing my best to serve my art and my family whilst keeping it all so very real. Love."
